Driving Better Solutions for Resilient Capabilities with Digital Transformation
Advanced risk management is paramount in chemical manufacturing – an inherently risky business. One of the planet’s top chemical makers – a publicly traded giant whose more than 50,000 employees span over 160 countries – continually evolves manufacturing processes while prioritizing safety across its 300 plants. This formulator’s enterprise architecture team sought to leverage operational insights from the masses of streaming data generated by its production facilities. BlueGranite worked in partnership with the team to deliver a robust modern data platform to usher in enterprise-wide digital transformation. The data and analytics solution is speeding safety and efficiency insights while slashing downtime.
Conserving water and power while improving crop yield is vital to the commercial agriculture industry’s long-term success. Using natural resources as efficiently as possible translates to higher-quality food and good land stewardship. A global leader in freshwater and wastewater management, about to embark on a high-stakes environmental project, wanted to thrive in both arenas, and it partnered with BlueGranite to ensure success.
As a worldwide supplier at the forefront of the building materials market, the competition is fierce. With the ubiquitous nature of their clientele, communication and relationship building has been challenging.
Since its founding in the 1950s, a company that produces offshore drilling equipment with several offices and over 6,000 employees worldwide, has continuously grown their fleet of drilling units, specializing in technically demanding sectors of the global offshore drilling business, while consistently maintaining their records of versatility, safety, and environmental quality. As the company has grown over the past seven decades so has their custody of physical documentation, ranging from human resources records to technical specification documents.
The “World Energy Production Capacity” report explores the energy capacity of various nations and highlights a few components of Power BI along the way. It attempts to drive viewers toward a better understanding of each country's capacity by energy source. It starts with raw numbers and then considers why raw numbers may not be the most appropriate measure to derive insights by country. It also moves from summary to detail by eventually allowing users to obtain plant-level data across the world.
The data is regularly compiled by the World Resources Institute and consists of over 28,600 power plants and production facilities from 164 countries. The data relates to production capacity rather than actual production or energy usage within a country. Capacity is the maximum amount of energy that could be produced by a power plant under optimal conditions. Not all facilities operate at 100% capacity, however, and countries trade energy for consumption. As a result, the Power BI report shows the production potential by various countries if all facilities were operating at their maximum capacity.

This report shows the results of a real-world manufacturing scenario. This customer was looking for opportunities to improve supplier performance, from purchase order to delivery; understanding of weighted-average payment terms; and visibility into non-managed supplier performance and costs. The data is grouped by product category using a scalable data warehouse, leveraging a modern data platform (MDP) on Microsoft Azure. As such, users can leverage both structured data as well as detailed transactional data in a curated data lake. Purchasing patterns are easy to find through dynamic and cross-filtered dashboards, charts, and tables, allowing management to quickly identify opportunities for cost reduction, supplier consolidation, and contract coverage.
All visualizations, on all pages of the report, are dynamically filtered as users interact with the data, including multiple slicers for better granularity, drill down by period, and drill-through pages for greater detail and insight.
Spend Overview contains drillable overall spend by category, region, period, and PO.
Payment Terms shows average payment terms and delinquency over time, helping to identify patterns in supplier contracts and payments.
Preferred Spend compares how the company utilizes preferred vendors to non-preferred, non-contractual spend.
Supplier Score Card provides a summary of supplier metrics, helping to quickly find the most cost-efficient vendors.
